In an unexpected news, Argentinean football star Lionel Messi has reportedly sent a letter to Barcelona informing the club that he wants leave the team. This comes after Barca’s humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals.
After the quarterfinals loss, Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu told that Messi had informed numerous times that he wants to finish his career at Barca, and added that he’s still the best player in the world, and the team has him with them. He further said that a cycle is coming to an end and another one starts in the Messi era.
It was in July 2017 that Barcelona and Messi announced a contract extension which meant Messi will be with the team until June 30, 2021 with the contract amounting to €565,000 ($645,000) a week. Messi has been with the club since 2000, and the six-time Ballon d’Or winner made his league debut for Barcelona in 2004. He has lead Barcelona to 10 league titles and Champions League four times.
