AR Rahman's fans couldn't ask for more today. Announcing the 65th National Film Awards on Friday, the jury delivered a surprise by choosing the Mozart of Madras in two crucial music-related categories.
If he won the Best Music Director award for Mani Ratnam's 'Kaatru Veliyidai' ('Cheliyaa' in Telugu), Rahman also won the Best Background Score for the Hindi-language film 'Mom'. The former was a box office disaster, and the latter was a hit.
Note that Rahman is now the only composer who has got six national awards in total. He has beaten Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who has five to his credit!
Coming back to 'Kaatru Veliyidai', starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari, released last summer, it was panned by critics. Perhaps, Rahman's music and the film's visuals were the only elements which were spared. Although the film bombed at the box office, Mani Ratnam at least can heave a sigh of relief today.
