Here is one more positive news in times of Covid-19. As per media reports emerging on Monday, Apple is set to shift a portion of its manufacturing base from China to India.
"The electronics and technology giant wants to move a fifth of its production capacity (in other words, 20 percent) from China to India," says Livemint, quoting sources. This is in the wake of the Modi government coming up with a new production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme to boost domestic manufacturing, and China becoming less attractive due to the pandemic.
Apple Inc will use its contractors Foxconn and Wistron to produce up to $40 billion worth of smartphones in India, several media reports say. The production will be purposed for exports to other markets.
Livemint writes that the company has had a good experience with India. "Apple took 62.7% of the market share in India’s premium smartphone market in the last quarter," it says.
Note that Apple is yet to confirm the reports.
