Amidst attempts to form a Select Committee by the AP Legislative Council to study two bills on the three-capital decision of the Jaganmohan Reddy government (as also the idea to promote decentralisation), the Centre has today said that the State is free to have its capital city or cities anywhere it wants.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs today said, "The Government of Andhra Pradesh had notified Amaravati as the capital city, vide its GO dated 23.04.2015.  Recently, media reports have appeared indicating the state government's decision to create three capitals for the State.  It is for each State to decide each capital within its territory."

The above statement was made as a written reply in Parliament to a question asked by TDP MP Galla Jayadev in Lok Sabha.
