A day after announcing that alcohol prices would be increased by 25%, the Government of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday came out with another 50% hike. In aggregate terms, it is a 75% increase with effect from May 5.
On Monday, which was the first day of the reopening of wine shops in the State for the first time in more than 50 days, AP earned Rs 68 Cr in revenue from alcohol sales.
Since thousands have been taking to streets and standing in serpentine queues to buy liquor, social distancing has been ignored by 'mandu babulu'.
The move to raise taxes is to discourage people from consumption. As per a Livemint report, the latest hike will give the state additional revenue of Rs 9,000 Cr per annum.
