The Andhra Pradesh government has increased fines for traffic rule violations substantially in keeping with the amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, made in 2019. The Centre made the changes last year. However, the Jaganmohan Reddy government has framed increased penalties only now.

Here are the highlights:

Under-age driving: Rs 5,000 (increased from Rs 500).

Dangerous driving: Rs 1,500 in case of first offence, and Rs 10,000 in case of repeat offence. Dangerous driving includes mixing phone-calling with driving.

Over-speeding: Rs 5,000 in case of first offence, and Rs 10,000 in case of repeat offence.

Letting someone else drive your vehicle will invite a penalty of Rs 5,000.

If you make changes to your vehicle flouting rules, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed.

Unregistered vehicles or vehicles without a fitness certificate will invite a fine of Rs 2,000 (first offence) and Rs 5,000 (repeat offence).

Plying unpermitted vehicles: Rs 10,000.

Overloading a vehicle: Rs 20,000.

Not stopping the vehicle to let weight be checked: Rs 40,000.

Not giving way to emergency vehicles: Rs 10,000.

Unnecessary honking: Rs 1,000 (first offence), Rs 2,000 (repeat offence).

Obstructing checking of vehicles by the concerned authority will invite a fine of Rs 750.

Refusal to give information related to your motor vehicle and license-holder will invite a fine of Rs 750.
