Anti-CAA riots: Destroy public property & pay the price
- IndiaGlitz, [Friday,January 03 2020]
The anti-CAA protests in parts of India have descended into riots in the last two weeks. In Meerut, parts of Bengal, Delhi and others, many protestors freely went on a rampage and destroyed public property. The police, especially in Uttar Pradesh, have had a tough time quelling the riots.
In this context, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has come up with a policy. He is making the rioters, identified with the help of technology, to pay for damages.
This is principled. If you have the fear that you will be made to pay for a bus that you recklessly destroyed, you will not resort to violence in the future. Some commentators are of the view that this kind of deterrence is the need of the hour.
After UP, Indian Railways is getting ready to recover damages from anti-CAA rioters. And Delhi Police is asking for a Damage Commissioner to assess and make rioters pay. This has to become a nation-wide practice, says social media influencer Abhijit Banerjee.
