US Stresses Importance of Accountability Amid India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions

Antony J. Blinken, the US Secretary of State, stated that the US has been coordinating with Canada regarding its allegation linking the Indian government to a killing on Canadian soil. The US wishes to see the Canadian investigation proceed, gain India's cooperation, and lead to accountability. Blinken emphasized the US's vigilance concerning alleged transnational repression and took it seriously as a broader international issue. This broader issue appears to reference US criticism of China for its pattern of transnational repression in the West.

Blinken made these comments during a press conference in New York regarding Canada's allegation connecting agents of the Indian government to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist and Canadian citizen. The State Department affirmed that the US considers its relationship with India vital but takes this issue very seriously. The US will uphold its principles, consult with its ally, and engage in law enforcement and diplomatic processes.

Blinken and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan both confirmed direct engagement with the Indian government while refraining from characterizing diplomatic conversations. Blinken stressed the importance of moving the investigation forward and urged Indian cooperation. He also highlighted the broader issue of preventing alleged transnational repression, which the US takes very seriously.

The US administration and Congress have criticized China's transnational repression, particularly against Uyghurs, Tibetans, ethnic and religious minorities, Hong Kongers, and citizens living abroad. The State Department has described China's actions as especially pervasive and persistent.

In response to questions about US-Canada consultation, the evidence behind the allegation, India's concerns, and potential changes in the US approach to India, a State Department spokesperson emphasized that private diplomatic conversations, intelligence matters, and law enforcement details would not be commented upon. However, the US continues to coordinate and consult closely with Canada on the issue, reaffirming the importance of its relationship with India while taking the issue seriously.
