The Chennai High Court has sought an interim stay on the release of Thalapathy Vijay's 'Mersal' based on a plea that theater owners collect exorbitant ticket charges during the release of such big movies.

The apex court has decided to place the petition for consideration to the Chief Justice and place the issue under the classification 'public interest is involved'.

The petitioner G Devarajan from Perambur claimed that theater owners collect ticket charges much more than the prescribed rates during the first five days of the release. 

Stating that even though theaters bring down the cost after a few days post release, the rates are still more than the ordinary charges. The petitioner also claimed that theater owners charge extra citing GST as the reason.

With already the release of new movies have been stopped in opposition to the GST and entertainment tax levied, this comes off as a disconcerting news for millions of fans who eagerly await the release of ‘Mersal’ this Diwali on October 18.
