A woman sub-inspector in Madhya Pradesh's Kotra village turned priest to perform the rituals for setting up the idol of Goddess Durga. The lady cop had resorted to this seemingly eccentric action as the brahmins in the area refused to perform rituals for an idol that was being erected by dalits.

The dalits who had informed the village pundit beforehand were disappointed when he refused to perform the ritual at the eleventh hour. The villagers then approached the police and informed them of the caste discrimination inflicted upon them.

Sub-Inspector Anjali Udayniya took matters into her hands offering to 'turn priest' herself saying that she too was a brahmin and knew how to perform the rituals.

However, there was no case registered against any member of the upper caste. The sub-inspector also refuted claims against the presence of caste-conflict in the village.
