The 1991 release Thalapathy, starring Superstar Rajnikanth and Megastar Mammootty in lead roles, and directed by Maniratnam has been considered one of the cult classics, and till date, many top stars reveal they would love to star in the modern remake of the film whenever questioned on which remake they would like to star in.

Thalapathy also starred Arvind Swami, Shobana, Srividya, Jai Shankar, Amrish Puri and Nagesh, and had music by Ilaiyaraja and cinematography by Santhosh Sivan. Recently, in a show on a TV channel, music director Anirudh was questioned on who will be the apt choice to play Deva if Anirudh plays Thalapathy's Surya character.

Without any hesitation, Anirudh responded that if he plays Rajnikanth's Surya character, Siva Karthikeyan will play Mammootty's Deva character and following this there was a huge cheer from fans around. Anirudh has scored music for Siva Karthikeyan movies like Ethirneechal, Kaaki Sattai and many more and is next composing for Vignesh Shivn movie as well.
