Amit Shahs remarks deemed anti-Muslim

Addressing a rally in Kolkata, Amit Shah yesterday said that Muslim illegal immigrants won't be given refuge in India. He didn't say it explicitly but indirectly. "I today want to assure Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian refugees that you will not be forced to leave India by the Centre. Don't believe rumours. Before National Registry of Citizens, we will bring Citizenship Amendment Bill, which will ensure these people get Indian citizenship," the Union Home Minister said.

A huge row has erupted over the remarks. The BJP leader's critics are of the view that Shah had made a communal statement. "Why is it that only Muslims are not welcome? Is this the India of our dreams?" a Facebook user asked. Actor Siddharth lost balance and termed Shah as "Home Monster".

However, Shah has found supporters among the general public. "Pakistan was created in 1947 as a homeland for Muslims. Hindus, among other minorities, have been persecuted in Pakistan and Bangladesh. That's why they deserve refuge in India. Muslims are not persecuted anywhere," a commentator said. Another said, "Nobody is saying Muslims are not welcome. Only illegal immigrants are not welcome. Our country's resources are limited. How can millions of Muslim immigrants be accommodated? They come to this country in search of greener pastures. They are not persecuted in their home countries."
