What if someone told you millions of electronic goods such as laptops and TVs are destroyed by Amazon? This is said to be happening at an alarming rate. An investigative report by the UK-based ITV News says that Amazon is destroying lakhs of items of unsold stock every year just in one warehouse in the UK. The report has shocked many.

Many of the smart TVs and laptops are often new and unused, the report claimed, quoting an anonymous former employee of Amazon. The former employee, claims ITV News, had secretly filmed the destruction of lakhs of items in the UK warehouse. Lorries containing the unsold stock dump the 'waste' in a landfill. This has caused environmental concerns, too, as a Greenpeace activist added.

All along, it was clear that giants like Amazon regularly destroy unsold stocks. But it was never known to be this humongous.

Most of the comments on the investigative report were rants against capitalism. "Capitalism has an inherent, irrational tendency toward crises of overproduction. Not in the sense that there is 'too much stuff' but that capitalists cannot sell all the stuff for high enough profit so they resort to destroying things to lower supply and increase demand," tweeted Jathan Sadowski, a researcher.

Many users pointed out that the unsold stocks can fruitfully be distributed for free to the needy in poor countries. "During the pandemic, there were children using their parents' mobile phone to access virtual schooling whilst big businesses were throwing away MacBooks," wrote a verified Twitter user.
