It's known that the Andhra Pradesh government has proposed to rename the Konaseema district as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district. On Tuesday, clashes broke out between those who are opposed to the renaming and the police forces.
The protests turned violent after hundreds of protestors gathered at a spot. Stone-pelting prevailed despite prohibitory orders. It's reported that OBC groups are strongly opposed to renaming.
Protestors burnt down vehicles and public property. The media reported that around 20 policemen were injured due to stone-pelting.
Minister Pinipe Vishvaroop's house was set on fire by protestors. This particular incident has been likened to the situation in Sri Lanka, where agitators recently burnt down the houses of Ministers.
The situation in AP is alarming, commentators have said. The casteist divisions the latest set of protests are expected to kindle could be a turning point in the political history of Amalapuram and nearby villages in the region.
Home Minister Taneti Vanitha has hinted at a deep opposition conspiracy to instigate disturbances. She also said that a thorough investigation will be done to bring out the truth.
On the other hand, Netizens and several opposition political leaders are alleging that the YS Jaganmohan Reddy government has successfully diverted the public attention from some other political and law & order issues by allowing the Amalapuram protests to go out of hand.
