Athletic actor Akshay Kumar proves that he’s not one to take his roles lightly especially if he has been chided about being lackadaisical regarding character research. The last time Akki sported a beard to play a Sikh in Anees Bazmee's Singh Is Kinng, he was slammed for his error in beard length. This time for his next role as a Sikh in Kamagata Maru, he has met with the community to determine the exact length he should grow his beard to. In fact the actor is so committed that he has set aside all his other commitments to focus on continuity.

The movie is based on the real life story of a Sardarji who sailed in the fateful ship named Kamagata Maru from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914. Deepa, who was instrumental in casting the star, says that Akshay’s authentic Panju-Sardar look in Singh Is Kinng is what got her attention. She adds that Akki’s role is on a serious and political vein in a very challenging role.
