The hi-tech and powerful ‘Aakash’ missle was tested successfully in Odisha yesterday from the Chandipur-on-sea missile base in Balasore District in the State.
The ‘Aakash’ supersonic missile, which is fired from the ground, is capable of targeting and destroying unmanned drone mini-aircraft. During the test-firing, ‘Aakash’ hit the target and decimiated it successfully. The missile has state-of-the-art modern equipment fitted to it and its flight was monitored carefully by a team of experts.
Satish Reddy, scientific advisor to the Union Defence Ministry, was present at Chandipur to witness the launch of the missile and its successful attack at the intended target. He lauded scientists for their untiring work and accomplishments. After the launch of the missile, it was formally informed that the missile had been inducted into the Indian Army.
Made indigenously by the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), the research wing of the Union Defence Ministry, ‘Aakash’ was fully devised using the technology available on-hand. It can soar up to 25 km into the sky in attacking its targets. With an in-built automatic mechanism, the missile can turn 3600 and can attack any target in the vicinity and range.
