January 10 witnessed the release of two of the biggest and most hyped and anticipated movies of the year, the Superstar Rajnikanth - Karthik Subbaraj combo's action mass entertainer Petta, and Thala Ajith - Siva combo's rural entertainer Viswasam, and there was huge frenzy surrounding them.

2 days post the release, both the movies have lived up to the expectations, satisfying their target audience, as Petta has appealed unanimously to Rajni fans, while Viswasam has become a family audience hit. As the movies are making merry at the box office, Ajith has also created a record with Viswasam.

For the first time in 27 years,a Superstar Rajnikanth movie has opened at number 2 in TN box office, as Viswasam had higher day 1 collections in TN than Petta (though Petta leads worldwide). A previous instance of Rajni movie opening at number 2 in TN happened in 1992 Diwali, when Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Haasan starrer Thevar Magan thumped Superstar Rajnikanth's Pandian at the box office. Meanwhile, both Petta and Viswasam have been doing great business, making trade extremely happy prior to Pongal festivities.
