Ajit Wadekar one of India's most successful cricket captains has passed away on August 15th aged 77 at Jaslok Hospital Mumbai where he was battling cancer. Cricket fans have mourned the loss of one of Indian cricket's most celebrated sons who captained his team comprising of legends Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Vishwanath, Venkatraghavan, Bishen Singh Bedi and others to its first overseas win against the West Indies in 1971 and later twice against England.
Former player and current Team India coach Ravi Shastri has stated "Sad moment for Indian cricket to lose one of its most successful captains. Shrewd to the core. Condolences to the entire family". Ajit Wadekar is one of the few to have played cricket, captained the team, functioned as coach/manager and has also been the Chairman of Selectors.
