An Air India flight heading from Mumbai to Newark Airport in the US made a precautionary landing at London Stansted Airport on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat. Flight AI 191 was diverted sometime between 9:50 am and 10:15 am due to the threat. Flightradar24 suggested that the involved aircraft was a Boeing 777-337. The Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets had to intercept the flight and take it to the airport. 128 miles north of London, residents in the city of Derby reported hearing a loud bang at around 10 am. This could have been due to the sonic boom of the fighter jets.
An RAF spokesperson said: “The Typhoon aircraft were authorized to transit at supersonic speed for operational reasons; any inconvenience caused to local residents is regretted.” The airport reported that the aircraft was “parked on an isolated stand away from the normal airport operations.” Following the precautionary landing, the runway is now fully in operation. The airport also apologized for any inconvenience caused.
