A district in Pakistan's Sindh province is dealing with a HIV epidemic of sorts. Perhaps, this is one of the biggest health crises in the world right now.
A doctor named Muzaffar Ghangharo has been accused of injecting HIV-infected syringes into more than 500 people in the district over the last few months. Police are investigating whether he did it intentionally or due to negligence. The child specialist has been arrested and questioned.
Thousands of residents in the village have been screened for HIV. So far, 500 have tested positive. Tragically, most of the infected are children and at least 60 percent of them are under the age of five.
The district is economically and socially backward. Most of the doctors are untrained and they use folk medicine. Doctors here are notorious for using injections for every small ailment.
