Finally there is a film arriving this weekend for which there is good enough enthusiasm amongst audience, industry as well as trade. While 'Players' was pretty 'thanda' from the very beginning, there were apprehensions around 'Don 2' (mainly after the backlash that 'Ra. One' suffered from) and 'Ladies v/s Ricky Behl' was never touted to be a blockbuster, the last film to have been 'hot' around it's release time period was 'The Dirty Picture'. Everyone is aware about how the film went on to perform and from being a good success in the making, it went on to attain blockbuster status.
Now 'Agneepath' too is expected to follow the same path and while it is a given that the film would take a good opening, the million dollar question is around the distance it would end up covering in the final run. The film has a lot going in it's favour, right from the fact that as a product 'Agneepath' has gained cult status for itself in the last couple of decades gone by. The 'masala' flavour works for it as well while, very good promotional campaign by Karan Johar and a powerful antagonist (Sanjay Dutt) add on to the appeal.
To top it all there is a lead protagonist (Hrithik Roshan) whose name spells 'quality and who is returning to a hardcore commercial affairs after back to back middle-of-the-road cinema like 'Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara', 'Guzaarish' and 'Kites'. Moreover there is also 'Chikni Chameli' which is only going to add on to the overall commercial aspect of the film. Also, one has to remember that it has been more than a month (since the release of 'Don 2') that audience has seen a Hindi movie in hordes which means that there is a market wide open to be explored.
Now all one hopes, wants and expects is that first time director Karan Malhotra has made a film which is wonderful enough to dilute all comparisons with the original which are all set to be made. This means that while a huge opening over the four day long weekend is pretty much on the cards (anything over 70% occupancy would ensure at least 60 crore opening), it's a matter of the film's acceptability which would decide it's ultimate run. Arriving solo with no major competition in sight till Karan's own 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' arrives on 10th February, 'Agneepath' has all in it to cross the 100 crore barrier for Hrithik.
