On Sunday evening, parts of South Delhi witnessed violent protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act. At the famous Jamia Millia Islamia University, policemen barged into library and other spots to disrupt students. Several students were later paraded with their hands held up.

The University stands closed till January 5 following the clashes between protestors and policemen. Earlier on Monday, 50 students who had been detained were released.

As per a statement made by the Delhi Police, the violence and stone-pelting by protesters resulted in injuries of several policemen, including South East District DCP, Additional DCP (South), 2 Assistant Commissioner of Police, 5 Station House Officers and inspectors.

Protests spread:

Protests have spread far and wide. In IIT Bombay, several students took out a mid-night march. In parts of Kerala, too, thousands have protested against the CAA. In Hyderabad's Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), the University's students' unions protested on Sunday night. Semester exams have been postponed.

Peace prevails in Uttar Pradesh

While violence has been reported from Bengal, North-Eastern States like Assam, and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh has maintained law and order effectively. UP CM Yogi Adityanath, reports ANI, has appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony and not pay attention to rumours regarding Citizenship Amendment Act. "The government is committed to the security of every citizen. For this, it is also important that all citizens abide by the law," the CMO has said.
