After ban on Suriya's movies, 30 producers issue joint statement

Last week, actor Suriya's production house decided to directly release a Jyothika-starrer on a streaming site. Since the film skipped a theatrical release, the Theatres Association in Tamil Nadu announced that it will be boycotting Suriya's movies from now. Its President said that no movie involving Suriya as an actor or a producer will be allowed to release in Tamil Nadu.

Following this, a joint statement has been released by 30 Kollywood producers about the OTT release of small and medium budgeted movies. Here are the key highlights of the statement:

The producers welcome the OTT release of small or medium budgeted movies, saying that this move will not just help the producer in recovering the investments, but also will help decrease the number of small movies facing release issues (due to lockdown).

The statement adds that the producer who invests money in a movie holds all the rights over its business decisions, including whether he wants a theatrical release or not.

It requests the distributors, theatre owners and producers to co-operate and make decisions together.

It demands that no single association must make decisions affecting any producer.
