Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has revived the idea of the Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Bill (UPCOCA), first mooted during Mayawati's regime.

The aim of the mooted stringent Bill is to rap on the knuckles of the underworld-politician nexus in India's most populous State. Organized crime has been causing immense financial loss to the state exchequer, besides throwing up depressing crime rates.

If and when this Bill is passed, it will free up illegally-held government properties in various sectors, besides cracking the whip on the underworld.

The only other State to have such a bill is Maharashtra.
