Actress Kasthuri's comments on Dravidian ideologies and her subsequent statements have sparked a major controversy in Tamilnadu. Her remarks, which were made during a protest aimed at defending the Brahmin community, included controversial claims about Telugu-speaking people and their historical presence in Tamil society.
Kasthuri's assertion that "Telugus are the ones who came to serve the harem women during the days of the kings" and her question regarding who should be considered truly Tamil, including Brahmins, ignited widespread criticism.
These comments, coupled with her statement suggesting that the anti-Brahmin rhetoric in Tamil Nadu arises because Brahmins uphold certain moral principles like avoiding adultery, rejecting polygamy, and refraining from seizing property, intensified the backlash. The fallout was significant, with Tamil and Telugu communities reacting strongly, leading to extensive social media trolling and severe criticism, particularly from Telugu people.
In response to the growing outrage, Kasthuri issued a public apology. He tried to clarify her remarks through social media, expressing that her words were misrepresented and did not intend to insult the Telugu-speaking community. She also posted multiple tweets to placate Telugu media and people and had initially planned a press conference in Hyderabad to provide further clarification. However, this plan was later abandoned.
As a result of the public outcry and formal complaints, Tamil Nadu CID police became involved, attempting to summon Kasthuri for questioning. When they visited her residence, it was found locked, and her phone was unreachable, prompting the formation of special teams to locate her.
