Kalpana, who is better known to Telugu people as a sister of Urvashi, breathed her last at Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad.

She was active in films till the end. Survived by a daughter, she divorced her husband, a film director, in 2012.

She famously won a National Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2013 for her role in Thanichalla Njan. She once complained that he had been typecast as a comedienne, suggesting that her talent was not limited to just comedy. Many praise her as a nonpareil comedienne in Mollywood.

Kalpana was seen in the Telugu film Prema and Size Zero recently. She was here in Hyderabad to act her part in Oopiri, where she is playing Nagarjuna's mother. It is learnt that Nagarjuna and Karthi went to Apollo Hospital as soon as they learnt about Kalpana's death.
