Actress assault case: Kavya Madhavan appears before court

Actress Kavya Madhavan, who is the ninth accused in the Kerala actress abduction case, appeared before the special court on Tuesday. Kavya was included in the list of witnesses to prove that Dileep was not on good terms with the survivor actress. According to the prosecution, Kavya had witnessed a heated exchange of words between Dileep and the survivor actress during one of the rehearsals of a stage show by the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

Kavya, the second wife of Dileep, was questioned earlier too as part of the investigation as it was alleged that the survivor had revealed Dileep's extra-marital affair with Kavya to his first wife Manju Warrier. Meanwhile, Manju Warrier too revealed that it was the survivor actor who revealed the extra-marital affair of Dileep to her. This is said to have angered Dileep, who conspired the revenge crime. One of the main accused, Pulsar Suni had confessed about Kavya's role in the conspiracy against the victim.

The popular Malayalam actress was abducted and assaulted by a gang in a moving car in Kochi on February 17, 2017. Dileep was found to be a conspirator in the case and was charged with "revenge crime". According to the prosecution, Dileep had hired people to kidnap and assault the actress and he wanted them to record visuals of the act and hand it over to him. Months later, actor Dileep was arrested in connection with the case and spent several weeks in jail before securing bail. Ten accused, including actor Dileep and Pulsar Suni, are facing trial in the case. More than 50 people from the Malayalam film industry are witnesses in the case. Manju Warrier, Samyukta Varma, Kunchako Boban, singer Rimi Tomy are among those who gave statements in the case.

Though the High Court and the Supreme Court had set deadlines for completing the trial, the trial court had got the dates revised in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
