In spite of repeated requests made by several stars, Women in Cinema Collective and the victim herself, many popular Tamil newspapers, TV channels, magazines and websites in Tamil Nadu have been regularly publishing the name and photograph of the actress who is a victim of sexual assault in February 2017. As you know, Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code prescribes imprisonment of up to two years for anyone including media houses and journalists who discloses the identity of a victim in sexual assault.
With screenshots of those reports doing the rounds in Kerala, the state`s Women`s Commission has slammed the Tamil dailies for violating the law. Its chairperson M. C. Josephine sought immediate intervention of Tamil Nadu Women`s Commission and Public Relations Department to take immediate action against such media houses. Josephine also asked for the immediate removal of the victim`s name and photo from the articles in which they were used.
