During the press meet of his new movie 'Oruthee', renowned Malayalam actor Vinayakan landed himself in trouble after he made a tasteless remark on the #MeToo Movement, a social campaign against sexual abuse and harassment where survivors publicize allegations. In the media interaction, the actor had a war of words with the media reporters and was also quoted saying that he did not know what #MeToo was. His statement was as follows :"What is #MeToo? I have no idea. Is it up to the woman? I have had a physical relationship with ten different women. I have asked all the ten women if they would like to have a physical relationship with me. I will still ask them if that is what #MeeToo means. No woman has come to me and asked me for physical intimacy." (sic) His statement sent shockwaves across the industry. From celebs to fans, several people slammed the actor for his statement.
Now, days after his controversial press meet, the actor has now apologized for his insensitive comments. Taking to his Facebook handle, the actor penned a lengthy apology note to the journalist by referring to her as a 'sister'. In his apology statement, the actor said that his comments were not targeted at personal level. Though the actor has penned an apology to the journalist, he hasn't opened up much on his controversial statement on the ‘Me Too’ movement. It may be noted that back in 2019, the Oruthee star was arrested for allegedly verbally abusing a woman activist over a phone call. Since it was a bailable offense, he was granted bail.
On the work front, Vinayakan is basking in the success of his latest movie 'Oruthee' helmed by VK Prakash. The movie, which marks the comeback of actress Navya Nair, has Vinayakan in a cop avatar. The movie was released last week and has opened to positive responses from all corners.
