On Sunday, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has decided to ban versatile actor Shammi Thilakan as "he violated the forum discipline". Reportedly, the actor videotaped the AMMA general body meeting held at Kochi in 2021 and published it on social media via post. After the issue sparked debates among the members of AMMA, the executive committee transferred the case to the disciplinary committee. The decision to ban the actor was passed with the approval of the majority of the members of the association, although some members reportedly raised voices against the decision. According to the reports, a few members, including actors Jagadeesh and Mammootty were against the decision of barring Shammi Thilakan from the association.
During his interaction with media, actor Shammi Thilakan alleged that the actions taken against him by ‘AMMA’ officials are motivated by their vendetta towards his father. For the unversed, it may be remembered that Shammi's father and veteran actor Thilakan was suspended from the organization in March 2010 citing 'indiscipline' for questioning the 'overwhelming power' of superstars in the organization. He also criticized that the activities of AMMA organization were not transparent. As the actor refused to apologize, saying that ‘he did nothing wrong', the organization headed by actor Innocent then, banned him for a lifetime. After the demise of the National Award winning actor, his son Shammi had fought for his dad.
Recently, Shammi Thilakan has voiced against the association's silence on the decision to expel actor-producer Vijay Babu who was accused of Sexual assault. Actor Hareesh Peradi also stood against the association’s decision to keep Vijay Babu in AMMA despite the sexual allegation against him. In the month of May, Hareesh had even resigned from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) in protest against the misogynist attitude of the organization.
