Crimes against women have been the bane of the world since time immemorial and even today with so much advancement in technology the fairer sex still have to face the same threats to their modesty. Luckily in some cases justice is served and reinforces the belief that even the rich and famous will be punished.
Actor Kevin Guthrie famous for his roles in the worldwide super hit 'Fantastic Beasts' films has been sentenced to three years imprisonment by a Glasgow Sheriff Court in England for sexually assaulting a 29-year-old woman who was in fact unwell at that time.
The incident is said to have occurred in 2017 when the woman met Guthrie and his friend and actor Scott Reid at a bar in Glasgow but on her way she felt ill and her taxi driver informed them about it. Since Reid's flat was nearby the two actors took her there and she was made to lie on the bed to rest.
The woman has stated in court that when Scott Reid went out to get medical help for her Kevin Guthrie sexually assaulted her and in her own words "I remember my top being lifted up and my bra being held down. and he groped and performed a sexual act and stopped whenever Scott came back to the room and continued when he left. I was unsure of what was happening. I could not believe it was happening. He then carried out a further two sex acts and kissed me on the mouth".
The offender tried to defend himself stating in court that the woman was in a "panic" situation due to her health condition and misread the incident. But the evidence was against him as his DNA was found in the woman's pants and underwear. He then bemoaned that his career as an actor would be over but it was too late as he not was locked up in jail but also put on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
The judge who sentenced Guthrie 33 stated ' “You had an educational background and worked extremely hard to get a part in acting in acclaimed films. The court must show that women can be protected from domestic sexual offenses and those who do should suffer serious consequences. The offense you have been convicted for caused distress and consequences to the young woman involved in this case. Your position stands in contrast to your friend Scott Reid whose actions were highly commendable. He was constantly trying to get help through NHS 24 and did absolutely anything to help her. This must carry a custodial sentence".
Apart from 'Fantastic Beasts' Guthrie is also famous for his roles in the Netflix series 'The English Game', Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' and 'Sunshine on Leath'. After his conviction, it is said that he has been removed from several shows and films he was set to star and was already working in.
