He recalled that at the age of 15 he came from his hometown Tuticorin to try his luck in Tamil cinema and worked as a helper in a grocery store. He revealed that he was not allowed to eat till the shop in Thiruvanmiyur closed down at the night. However, understanding his plight a lady whom he calls Kala Akka who lived opposite the shop used to call him home and give him food to eat at exactly 7pm.
