Actor-director R. Pandiarajan's success in Tamil cinema is a rare phenomenon and he remains a great inspiration to many aspirants that talent is above conventional looks. A Chennai boy Pandiarajan wanted to become an actor even in his teens and his journey led him to assist director K.Bhagyaraj in three of his films, 'Antha Ezhu Naatkal', 'Thooral Ninnu Pochu' and 'Darling Darling Darling'.
During the discussion of 'Munthanai Mudichi' Pandiarajan was absent for a few days and only later Bhagyaraj came to know that he had signed a film as director and was feeling bad to tell him. At 21, Pandiarajan debuted as director with 'Kanni Raasi' a mature subject coated with comedy starring Prabhu, Revathi and Gowndamani. The film was an instant success and his very next film 'Aaan Paavam' he acted as the parallel lead and along with Revathi, Seetha and Pandian. The film became a blockbuster and there was no turning back as the people accepted him as a hero in spite of his below average height, protruding eyes and modest looks.
Pandiarajan has directed nine films and has acted mostly as the hero in more than seventy five films. He has costarred with Sivaji Ganesan in 'Muthukkal Moondru' and 'Thaikku Oru Thalaatu'. Actors Seetha, S.J. Suriya, Maiyilswamy, Kollangudi Karuppayee and Bengali actress Debashree Roy were introduced by him to Tamil cinema and so was Srikanth Deva as music director.
