One of the oldest multiplexes in Chennai is the Abirami Mega Mall in Purasaiwakkam that fist started functioning as a four theater complex in 1975 and upgraded as a multiplex and mall in 2005. The Pongal releases 'Petta' starring Rajini and 'Viswasam' starring Ajith will be the last films to be screened in the current structure as it will be closed down from February 1st 2019.
Abhirami Ramanathan has announced that Abhirami Mega Mall will be demolished and in its place a massive 17 storey modern structure will be built in the next two years. It is proposed that the first three floors will house a 10 screen multiplex and a shopping mall while the other 14 storeys will be a residential condomanium. It is further reported that only vegetarians will be allowed to buy or rent houses in the new Abhirami building.
