Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya had a phenomenal career run in the 90s. Almost every popular film had songs performed by him. Abhijeet's talent and melodious voice made him an icon but it seems like he's giving himself the credit for other people's success too. In a recent statement, he claimed that he turned Akshay Kumar into a superstar. Abhijeet said that his playback voice is for stars not actors.
Abhijeet even went on to call Akshay Kumar "a poor man's Mithun Chakraborty". He said, "My music made Akshay Kumar a star. When he was launched, he wasn’t a star. He was earlier known as ‘Gareebo Ka Mithun Chakraborty’ like how Mithun was known as ‘Gareebo Ka Amitabh Bachchan’. Music is so powerful that it can turn an actor into a star whether it’s Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, or Rajesh Khanna."
He further added, "Akshay became a star after Khiladi (1992 film for which Abhijeet had sung many popular songs including Waada Raha Sanam), and all his movies were titled as Khiladi later. My voice has suited them all. These are the actors who weren’t stars before but my songs turned them into stars."
It sure would be interesting to see how Akshay responds to this statement.
