Clash of the spoof boys - 9 years of Goa and Thamizh Padam!

9 years back, this day witnessed the clash of titans. A battle of epic proportions, with two icons of the industry releasing their movies on the same day, and presenting unmatched entertainment competing with each other. Director Venkat Prabhu, who had scored back to back hits with Chennai - 600028 and Saroja had returned with Goa, while CS Amuthan debuted with Thamizh Padam. While the former was Venkat Prabhu brand fun flick with his boys doing what they're best at, the latter was Tamil cinema's first complete spoof flick. Interestingly, Mirchi Shiva, a Venkat Prabhu regular, was the hero of Thamizh Padam, while Goa had Premgi,Jai and Vaibhav in lead roles. Goa was the maiden production venture of Soundarya Rajnikanth's Ocher studios, while Thamizh padam was the maiden production venture of Sashikanth's Y Not studios.
Goa revolved around happy go lucky boys Vinayagam(Jai) the Amirca guy,Ramarajan (Vaibhav) the village casanova and godchild Samikannu (Premgi), who flee Pannaipuram and reach the hot and happening Goa, only to confront different situations in love - Vinayagam falling in love with the modern, outgoing Roshni (Pia) and finding it difficult to express his feelings, Samikannu finding love in American girl Jessica(Melanie Marie) despite language differences, and Ramarajan getting married to the scheming entrepreneur Suhasini(Sneha). What happens when the friends get entangled in a trouble, and how they escaped out of Goa unscathed, is what the fun flick is all about. Thamizh Padam on the other hand, revolved around Shiva, the mass hero, who gets rich during the course of a song, falls in love, finds his long lost parents, all while being in an undercover operation eliminating anti socials and finding the mysterious, deadly person behind, named D. Who D is, and whether Shiva was successful in his operation is what director Amudhan presents us with perfectly packaged spoof sequences guaranteeing a laugh riot.
While the makers of Thamizh Padam announced the movie as a spoof, and with references made to lot of movies, Goa too was a part spoof, with many sequences referring to hits of the past. With Jai himself by his side, Premgi does a Subramaniapuram Azhagar(Jai's character in the Sasikumar directorial), with the hit number Kangal Irandal playing in the background as he romances Melanie Marie, gives the Paruthiveeran pose with Melanie with Ayyayo song playing, mouths Superstar Rajnikanth's Ulle Po from Baasha while protecting Melanie, the tightening of bracelet with Puli Urumuthu at the background referring to Vettaikaran Vijay, and the popular bubble gum flip and Cool from Sivaji the boss after the fight. The movie also had reference to Pokiri, with Premgi mouthing Oru vaati mudivu pannitenna dialogue from the movie, and Manmadhan with Simbu himself making a cameo as Madhan Kumar, to reach Suhasini towards the end, with the corrected machi sign on screens. Besides, the movie casually parodied the panchayat sequences of the early 90s flicks. Goa was ahead of time as it had presented the never before angle of gay love with Aravind Akash and Sampath's characters, and Venkat Prabhu had portrayed their relationship in a dignified manner. Another interesting fact on Goa was that, Sneha played Suhasini, which is her real name, and Prasanna, her husband, played her on screen pair as well.
On the other hand, Thamizh Padam gifted Tamil cinema the Agila Ulaga Superstar and was a full on spoof with references galore, right from the birth of the hero till the climax, with movies like Karuthamma,Boys, Thalapathi, Ghajini, Kaaka Kaaka, Pokiri, Baasha,Run, Ramana,Annamalai, Sivaji the Boss, Mouna Ragam, Chandramukhi, Mozhi, Kadhalukku Mariyathai, Kadhalan, and a lot of other movies, and even the climax courtroom sequence has the judge making references to Captain Prabakaran, Athipatti Citizen, making the movie, a completely film-packed one. So much that even a song in the movie, Oh Maha zeeya with gibberish words from various hit Tamil songs to form a catchy song. There was a special reference to Thalapathy Vijay in the entry song of Shiva Pacha Manja Thamizhan as the text reading Indha padalai paadiyavar ungal Shiva endru podumaaru kaettu kondaar was a direct reference to songs sung by Vijay in the early 90s.
Both the movies entertained in theaters, as well as with heir fun, interesting posters. Team Thamizh padam had started entertaining with their promotional posters, spoofing Thillana Mohanambal, Ramarajan's Shenbagame, Singaravelan, Veera and many other movies. However, in an unexpected manner, a fun poster war ensued between Goa and Thamizh Padam teams, as both of them released posters with captions giving counters to each other. While Venkat Prabhu's Goa had the tagline A Venkat Prabhu Holiday, CS Amudhan gave the tagline A CS Amudhan Working day for Thamizh Padam. Another poster celebrating the 50th day of Goa had the caption Idhanaal thaan, itharkuthaan ena engalukkum makkalukum Purindhu odikondirukum and Thamizh Padam's 50th day poster read Aen, Etharku, Eppadi ena engalukke puriyaamal odikondirukum and such fun posters from both the teams, offered adequate entertainment off screen as well.
Both the movies provided ample entertainment, as Goa, in typical Venkat Prabhu style emphasized on friendship with good dose of fun, while Thamizh Padam with its funny references, took audience on a trip down the memory lane, compare with the original sequences, and laugh out loud at the funny take. Ever feel bored or low? Tune in to these movies, refresh and energize yourself, as both the movies are perfect laugh riots you can relish with your buddies!
