In the early hours of Tuesday EST an earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude on the richter scale hit the gulf of Alaska 175 miles southeast of Kodiak, shortly after midnight. The Tsunami Warning Center has issued an alert to Southeast and south Alaska, including the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands, as well as British Columbia in Canada.
California, Oregon and Washington, are also on a Tsunami watch and the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management have warned citizens living within three blocks from the shore to prepare to evacuate if necessary. The quake had a depth of about 15 miles and as water is seen receding in many areas it is seen as a sign of huge waves hitting the coast.
