A 63-year-old woman sustained critical injuries from an attack by her son’s dogs in their backyard, leading to the loss of her leg, as confirmed by Utah authorities.
The incident, occurring at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, was potentially life-threatening. Taylorsville police revealed that the woman, despite being seriously injured, managed to contact 911 for assistance.
The victim was attacked by seven dogs belonging to her 38-year-old son, with whom she resides. Identified by the police as pit bulls, these dogs comprised two adults and five puppies.
Responding officers were forced to shoot and kill one of the adult female dogs, which had broken free while animal control officers attempted to contain the animals. The woman’s son surrendered the remaining dogs to the authorities. Law enforcement had previously used pepper spray to subdue the dogs and reach the injured woman.
As a consequence of the severe injuries, doctors had to amputate the woman’s leg, leaving her in critical condition. Police Chief Brady Cottam expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts are heavy following this incident, and we are grateful the victim was able to call 911 for help as quickly as she did — even as the attack was happening. It likely did save her life.”
An investigation into the unfortunate incident remains ongoing. Taylorsville is located approximately 10 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
