State Electricity Minister Thangamani has said that the Govt. has set up a 5-member committee, which would go around all the streets in Chennai to check for existence of any open transformers/electric boxes and repair the same.

Two girls died in Kodungaiyur in Chennai on Tuesday after they came into contact with a live electric wire which was reported dangling from an open electric box in the locality.  The incident has sent shock waves in Chennai and elsewhere in the State.  It was in this backdrop that the State has now set up a committee to inspect the boxes.

Speaking to newsmen, Thangamani said that the Govt. deeply regretted the untimely demise of the two girls.  “3 officers and 5 employees have been put on suspension for their inaction in the above case,” he informed.  He also said that a 5-member team has been constituted to go around the streets in Chennai to inspect existence of any such open electric boxes/transformers and rectify/repair the same.

“Pre-emptive action would be taken to ensure non-occurrence of such incidents in future,” he said and added the people’s security and safety was the utmost priority of the Govt.  “Complaints about short-circuit in any locality would be acted upon immediately by the TNEB,” he assured.
