Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said that Chennai received 56.6 cm rain in just five days during last week. “This was 72% of the total rainfall the State receives during the corresponding period,” he informed.
The chief-minister inspected flood-hit localities in Keelkattalai and Chitlapakkam on the suburbs of Chennai and coordinated flood-relief work in consultation with officials. He also distributed food packets and other items to the flood-hit people.
“Chennai has received 72% of the total rains during this period; despite the heavy downpour, the Govt. has taken adequate measures to rescue and rehabilitate the affected people. Out of the 315 places where water remained stagnated, 200 places have now been cleared of water. Likewise, 22 sub-ways which remained submerged in flood waters have been cleared for vehicular traffic.
“600 medical camps have also been set up to provide medical assistance to the people; 3,000 health and officials have been pressed into round-the-clock service. Minisers and senior IAS officers are personally supervising the flood-relief work,” he said and added that encroachments alongside water-bodies were being removed as per Supreme Court’s directives.
