Dream Girl' Hema Malini celebrated her 35 Wedding anniversary with He - Man' Dharmendra by sharing intimate pictures of the couple on twitter.
On this Occasion Ragaa.Com wishes the couple many more years of togetherness and shares with readers how their loved bloomed and after many hurdles how the duo tied the nuptial knot amidst severe opposition from both their families.
It was love at first sight for both Hema Malini and Dharmendra that blossomed in 1970 on the sets of the duo first film together suitably titled TUM HASEEN MAIN JAWAN and it took 10 long years for their love to culminate into marriage in 1980!
Hema Malini in her interview had once confessed that she had fallen in love with Dharmendra on first sight and had intentionally rejected all the marriage proposals that came her way from eminent actors like Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra and Girish Karnad, who was almost fixed by Hema's family. But Hema was adamant on marrying Dharmendra, though Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur, and had two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.
The opposition for marriage was from both the families, while Dharmendra's wife had left him and went to her mother's house along with his sons in protest likewise Hema's father strictly opposed to their marriage, as he did not wanted his daughter to marry an already married man. Secondly being a staunch Hindu (Iyengar family) and a Brahmin, he could digest his daughter wedding a Punjabi and non-vegetarian eating meat and drinking alcohol. Hence Hema Malini did not marry till her father was alive, only after his demise she got married.
As Dharmendra was already married the couple had to convert to Islam, as Hindu religion does not permit polygamy.
Hence Dharmendra got rechristened as Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn and Hema Malini got rechristened Aisha Bi R. Chakravarty and both performed marriage according to Islam by performing Nikha at a mehr (Islamic ritual of mandatory payment given by groom to bride) of Rs 111,000 in the presence of two legal witnesses on 21 August 1979.
Later on May 2, 1980 they both officially wedded in Iyengar fashion and Punjabi style as per Hindu tradition.
At the time of marriage Dharmendra was 44 years and Hema Malini 29 years but as the love does not mind age or any norms.
