In a shocking incident, a Bangladeshi woman gave birth to twins within 26 days after her first baby was born. The incident happened in late February, when a 20-year-old woman Arifa Sultana, gave birth to a baby boy. After a normal delivery, the mother and baby were discharged from the hospital.
Less than four weeks later, she visited the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain. Doctors performed an ultrasound and realized that Sultana was pregnant with twins. Reportedly, Sultana had a second uterus, a condition known as uterus didelphys. Due to this, her first baby and the twins were conceived at the same time and grown in separate wombs. As she did not get an ultrasound before the first delivery, the second uterus case was missed, said doctors. Immediately a C-section was performed to deliver twins: a boy and a girl.
According to the National Institutes of Health, uterus didelphys is a rare congenital abnormality, and the occurrence of twin gestation has an overall incidence rate of 1 in a million. Though the condition can cause pregnancy complications, but thankfully Sultana and all three of her infants are healthy.
