In a shocking development, a 25-year-old woman has filed a complaint with the police claiming that she was raped nearly 5000 times by 139 different men over a period of ten years.
Investigation of the case has been initiated after the police registered a 41-page FIR that contains the names of the 139 accused, which include student union leaders, people from film industry, and politicians, among several others. The woman, who resides in Hyderabad's Somajiguda, got married in 2009, three months after which her husband, in-laws and other relatives apparently started assaulting her. According to a report, the woman also claimed that following her divorce in 2010, a number of people exploited her and took her private pictures and videos. She also added that she was gangraped numerous times and was exploited in several other ways. Fearing threat to her life, she refused to reveal the incidents to the police but gained courage with the help and support of an NGO.
Based on her complaints, a case has been registered against the accused men under sections 376 (2) (public servant committing rape taking advantage of his official position), 509 (insulting modesty of a woman), and 354 (assault of criminal force with an intent to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. An investigation of the matter is currently in progress.
