Following the reopening of colleges in Chennai yesterday, police arrested 24 students who created a ruckus by travelling on the roof of buses. The disruption was caused by students of Pachayappa's College who were on the 47A bus. They were caught by the police in Aynavaram. The students also created trouble for passengers who did not descend from the bus. They climbed on top of the bus and began to dance.
The Aynavaram police secured 13 students from Ambedkar Arts and Science College and Pachayappa's College. Most of them were found to be old students who had encouraged the freshers to ‘celebrate’ bus day. Cops in Royapettah also caught students of New College who were travelling on the roof of the bus. They were let off with a stern warning. The Madras High Court had banned students from celebrating bus day due to the nuisance and threat to travellers on the road. This has not been 100% effective in preventing the students, however.
The police advised the students not to engage in such unlawful activities. They also spoke to the concerned college authorities and the parents before letting off the students.
