A water crisis is making news in India, especially because of what Chennai has been going through. A recent NITI Ayog report clearly warned that 21 cities in India will face groundwater depletion crisis from next year. Also, by 2030, 40 percent of Indians will not have access to drinking water, says the report.
In view of the dim situation staring at us, the NDA government has started taking steps to face the crisis. "There are 226 districts in the country where there is a water crisis. I am now trying to mobilize everyone to tackle this. We are thinking on the lines of how we can give priority to water under the MPLAD scheme. We also have to make society aware on water issues. A Jal Shakti ministry has also been set-up," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday in his address to the Parliament.
State governments have to work in coordination with local-self governments and the Centre to tide over the unprecedented situation.
