21-year-old Arya Rajendran, a BSc Maths student, will be the next Mayor for Thiruvananthapuram corporation in Kerala. It was the CPM district secretariat, which met on Friday, decided to appoint Arya in order to push for a Mayor belonging to the younger generation. With this major decision, Arya would be the youngest person to become a mayor in the country.
Arya is the daughter of Rajendran, an electrician, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent. Arya who is the ward councillor from Mudavanmugal, is also the state president of the Bala Sangham and a state office-bearer of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students’ organisation of the CPI(M). In the recent local body elections, Arya defeated UDF's Sreekala by 2,872 votes.
