Aniket Sharma, a member of a Kolkata cricket club, died on the field following a cardiac arrest on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old cricketer was a right-arm off spin bowler who had been playing for the Paikpara Club for over a year. He collapsed on the field during a practice match and was rushed to the RG Kar Medical Hospital soon after. However, he was declared brought dead, owing to a cardiac arrest, according to a statement from the medical staff.
“We were all there on the field, warming up. He wanted to play football for some time. But before that, while warming up he suddenly collapsed on the field and we rushed him to the hospital,” a teammate said. Aniket’s coach expressed his sorrow over the young player’s death and added that he was a brilliant talent. “He was a good cricketer. He was a brilliant team man and a good fielder too. We are shocked to say the least,” the coach said.
A postmortem will be performed to confirm the cause of death, according to hospital sources. Aniket is survived by his father and mother.
