2023 rewind: Small Films hit a Sixer

The box office allure of small films is often underestimated, yet when they strike gold, it becomes a sensational, almost miraculous event. As the acclaimed words of Trivikram in 'Khaleja' resonate, miracles are subtle and don't demand recognition afterward. This year, Telugu audiences were treated to half a dozen such miracles, where anticipation met reality, and the silver screen witnessed both pre-release fervor and post-release acclaim.
Balagam
Before 'Balagam,' Venu Tillu was seen as a comedian from 'Jabardasth' and a supporting actor. However, the film transformed perceptions. In an era where familial bonds are fading, 'Balagam' presented a narrative that reignited the essence of connections. Venu Tillu skillfully concealed his actor persona, revealing the heart behind the smiles. The film, made on a budget of three crores, raked in over 30 crores, bringing fame not only to Dil Raju's family but also to the entire cast.
Baby
'Baby' divided opinions, with some labeling it as the most nonsensical film. Yet, it etched itself into the year's cinematic landscape. Director Sai Rajesh brought societal issues to the forefront in a candid and beautiful manner. The emotional connect resonated with the youth, thanks to Vaishnavi Chaitanya's impactful dialogues and stellar performances by Anand Deverakonda and Viraj Ashwin. Despite opening at 10 crores, 'Baby' surpassed 90 crores, stopping just short of the 100 crore mark.
Samajavaragamana
Sree Vishnu, known for his penchant for unique content, faced mixed success in recent films. 'Samajavaragamana,' a departure from the norm, brought genuine laughter to the audience. With a simple yet engaging storyline, the Sree Vishnu and Naresh combination scenes proved to be hilarious. Made on a modest budget of less than ten crores, the film amassed a whopping 50 crores.
Bedurulanka 2012
The success of 'Bedurulanka 2012' lies in its concept and comedy, exposing how people exploit others in the name of superstitions and faith. Set against a rustic backdrop, the film beautifully captures the innocence of the villagers and the intelligence of the protagonist. Neha Shetty's glamour and Mani Sharma's music add strength to the narrative.
MAD
Narne Nithin, brother-in-law of Young Tiger NTR, marked his debut with 'MAD,' a college comedy that delivered laughter and commercial success. Despite being new to production, it proved to be a profitable venture.
Polimera 2
The sequel 'Polimera 2,' released in theaters after its OTT success, brought more twists and turns. While it didn't receive universal acclaim like its predecessor, it continues to draw audiences, showcasing its lasting appeal.
Keeda Kola, Mem Famous, Month of Madhu
Not all films this year met expectations. 'Keeda Kola,' despite generating pre-release excitement, fell short on humor, failing to impress audiences. 'Mem Famous' faced a similar fate, despite aggressive marketing. 'Month of Madhu,' marred by controversy, received conflicting reviews but failed to draw audiences to theaters despite social media efforts.
In the tapestry of 2023's cinema, these films, with their unique stories, performances, and moments, added vibrancy to the diverse landscape of Telugu cinema.
