The first half of 2012 has been peculiar in so far as the quantity of releases is concerned. It has been the norm that films hit by dime a dozen during holiday seasons. Surprisingly, 2012 has been different. In fact, Sankranthi and, more importantly, summer have had least number of releases!
Some eight films were scheduled to be released for Sankranthi. Finally, however, only two hit two hit the screen. Businessman and Bodyguard had the party, while Nippu, Poola Rangadu, Adhinayakudu were postponed for some reason or the other. Even Shankar's Snehithudu waited to hit the screens on January 26. Small and sensible film, Rajendra Prasad's Ayyare, that went unnoticed.
February and March, both exam months, saw the highest number of releases. February had seven notable releases. Starting with Rushi and Dhoni, which hit the screens on two consecutive days, the month saw Poola Rangadu, Nippu, Love Failure, SMS, and Ishq, with three of them fetching lollies for the distributors/exhibitors.
March too saw good number of releases. Malligadu, Eka Veera, Nuvva Nena, Mr. Nookayya were four releases which hit the screens in the first half. Unfortunately, none of them was a commercial hit. Ee Rojullo and Naa Ishtam were released on the same day, and the former has been the biggest small film in recent times. Lovely and 3 released on the same day, and the former earned good monies, while the latter was a disaster.
Come April, there were but only three notable releases, including Teja's Neeku Naku Dash Dash. Racha and Dammu were the only big releases.
May will see four big releases though Gabbar Singh, Daruvu, Endukante Premanta and Eega. It may be noted that, although this is a good number, a slew of awaited movies have been delayed. Adhinayakudu, Bhale Tammudu (dubbed), Rebel (filming), Eega (delayed release), Damarukam (filming), and others.
