The 13th edition of the prestigious Chennai International Film Festival will finally begin from January 6, 2016. The festival, which will be conducted usually in the month of December has been postponed this year due to severe rains that ravaged the city.
The festival will have the screening of as many as 184 films from 57 countries across the globe. 'Victoria' which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival award in 2015 will be the first film to be screened in the festival.
12 Tamil films will be screened in the festival. This includes 'Pisasu', 'Chennai Ungalai Anbudan Varaverkiradhu', 'Kirumi', '36 Vayadhiniley', 'Charles Shafiq Karthiga', 'Kathirvanananin Kodai Mazhai', 'Orange Mittai', 'Maya', 'Oattathoodhuvan-1854,' 'Radiopetti', 'Thakka Thakka' and 'Thani Oruvan'. Out of these 'Radipetti' is yet to be released in local theatricals and it has already participated in several International film festivals across the globe and also won awards.
Apart from these seven Tamil films of the yesteryear will be screened, as a tribute to passing legends 'Iyakkunar Sigaram' K.Balachander and 'Aachi' Manorama, This list includes 'Achamillai Achamillai', 'Agni Satchi', 'Oru Veedu Iru Vaasal', 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi', 'Sindhu Bhairavi', 'Major Chandrakanth' and 'Aval Oru Thodarkathai'.
Prominent filmmakers form Kollywood are expected to participate in each day of the festival and interactive sessions have been planned. Nadigar Sangam's newly elected executive member and actor Ramana has assured that the film industry will participate well in the festival. Special Red Carpet screening of Marquee films have been planned in all the eight days.
The films will be screened in Woodlands theater, Sathyam Cinemas, Inox multiplex and Russian Cultural center in Chennai. Passes have been priced at Rs.500/- while students and enthusiasts from film industry can avail the pass at Rs.200/-. The most active participant of the festival will get a 'Film Buff' award
